Summer’s here and I’m excited about movies!

In addition to the regular action blockbusters and goofy comedies, there’s a whole slew of sci-fi and superhero films I can’t wait to settle into with my popcorn and a box of Whoppers.

Still, as much as I’m looking forward to these films, I’m already tiring of some of the accompanying merchandising and co-branding.
Soda? OK. Toys? Sure. Lunch meat? Really?!
(Image source: WJLA-TV)"][/caption] Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius' speech to Georgetown University graduates Friday was briefly interrupted when a protester stood up and yelled that she was a "murderer," a reference to her pro-abortion stance, the Washington Post reported. As the man shouted, others in the audience booed loudly in an apparent effort to drown him out. Security personnel escorted the man away and Sebelius continued her speech, earning applause as she did so. According to the Post, Sebelius did not discuss the 2010 health care overhaul or the Obama administration's controversial stance on contraception in her remarks at the Washington, D.C. university. Catholic church leaders had argued it was inappropriate for Sebelius to speak at the Jesuit institution after writing the mandate that employers, including most religious ones, be required to provide contraception coverage for their employees.

When Rep. Rob Bishop (R-UT) heard that a school in his home state was fined $15,000 for accidentally selling soda during lunch, thus violating federal law, he was angry. But that's only part of the story. While The Blaze brought that story national attention on Thursday, now we come to find out that it wasn't the only school that had to fork over thousands of dollars for selling soda at the wrong time. As it turns out, Box Elder High School in Brigham City, Utah, was fined $19,000 for its own violation of the Healthy, Hunger-free Kids act of 2010. That led Bishop to deliver a passionate House speech on Wednesday where he lectured his colleagues on the Constitution. "It is restated in the 10th Amendment where each level of government had a specific and distinct responsibility. When the states were interfering with the federal government, it produced historical catastrophic consequences," Bishop said on Thursday. "But also when the federal government interferes with the role of states, the consequences will range from being catastrophic to just plain silly.” He wasn't done:
“In 2010, this congress passed the Healthy and Hunger-free Kids Act. We were wrong to pass it for five reasons. Number one, it was a Senate bill--that should have been our first tipoff.* Number two, it was opposed by the National Governor's Association. Three, it was opposed by the school boards association. Four, it violated the Constitution. Finally, number five, we created a one-size-fits-all federal program, not defined by us.”
Bishop explained both schools are important to him: he graduated from one and taught at the other for 23 years. “It was wrong for Congress to invade the role of states. It was wrong to punish kids for these silly reasons. It is wrong to violate federalism," he concluded. "If a community, school, and their PTA wanted to create the standards themselves, fine. It is wrong for this body to think that every issue has to be decided here in this room and it is wrong for us to forget that the 10th amendment has a purpose. It is there for a reason and should be respected.” You can watch the speech below: By the way, Bishop pleaded with his colleagues in 2010 not to pass this exact legislation for fear of a federal power grab (that would replace local and parental common sense). It seems he was right:
This contortion only comes from wind speeds of 140 miles per hour or more blowing back your lips and cheeks as you to try and keep your eyes closed so they don't dry out. This is what photographer Tadas ?erniauskas exposed his willing subjects to as a partner aimed a leaf blower at their faces. "It was meant to give some good laughter to the viewers and participants," ?erniauskas wrote in an email to The Blaze.*"It turned out to be more than I expected, and that is why I like what I do today -- every day is full of pleasant surprises." [caption id="attachment_317202" align="aligncenter" width="341" caption="(Photo: Tadas Cerniauskas)"][/caption] [caption id="attachment_317206" align="aligncenter" width="346" caption="(Photo: Tadas Cerniauskas)"][/caption] ?erniauskas is relatively new in the photography world.

Just a couple weeks ago, The Heartland Institute launched a controversial campaign using digital billboards in Chicago where it would soon be hosting its*Seventh International Conference on Climate Change. The billboard project, which compared belief in global warming as an extremist position like some of those held by mass murderers and terrorists, was ended within 24 hours of its posting. (Related: Billboard campaign compares belief in man-made global warming to 'murderers, tyrants and madmen') [caption id="attachment_317269" align="aligncenter" width="595" caption="One of the Heartland Institute's billboards featured earlier in the month. (Image: Heartland Institute)"][/caption] Now, Al Gore's Climate Reality Project has sponsored its own digital billboard*as a*response to Heartland's provocative stint. The New York Times' Green blog reports the billboard, managed by Clear Channel, states*“Who to believe on climate? Heartland … or EVERY National Scientific Academy in the world?" The Times reports Chief Executive of Climate Reality Project Maggie Fox saying the organization's message serves as*“a small reminder of who is really on the fringe.” [caption id="attachment_317270" align="aligncenter" width="595" caption="(Image: Climate Reality Project)"][/caption] The Times also reports another group was vying for the position. Forecast the Facts came up with its own billboard, which Clear Channel decided it would not post for trademark reasons. This billboard said*“We still support Climate Deniers. Do you?” and featured the pharmaceutical company*Pfizer's logo along with the amount of its donation to Heartland. Spokesperson for Clear Channel*Jim Cullinan told the Times there are legal reasons regarding the use of the Pfizer logo that prevented that billboard from going up. Forecast the Facts told the Times it was disappointed its ad was rejected:
“I’m sure that if we had wanted to run an ad that says ‘trees smell nice’ or something, they probably would have let us run that — but who knows,” said Brad Johnson, its campaign manager. [...] “Our goal was to highlight Pfizer and other corporations’ support of the Heartland Institute,” Mr. Johnson said. “The question to ask is whether these corporations are based on a foundation of science or on a foundation of profit.”
[caption id="attachment_317274" align="aligncenter" width="620" caption="(Image: Forecast the Facts)"][/caption] Although Heartland was strongly criticized for its campaign, Jim Lakely, the director of communications, said in a statement the organization makes no apology for it and that it was purposely provocative. “We know that our billboard angered and disappointed many of Heartland’s friends and supporters, but we hope they understand what we were trying to do with this experiment," Lakey said earlier this month. He also said that Heartland would be looking for more ways to to "communicate this 'realist' message on the climate."

Could Tasers Soon Be Outlawed? Supreme Court May Hear Case on Preserving This ?Useful

[caption id="attachment_315075" align="aligncenter" width="620" caption="(Photo: TASER)"][/caption] A traffic violation and refusal to sign a ticket resulted in a pregnant Seattle woman getting tased in 2004. The woman sued the officers and ended up losing the case. According to the New York Times, United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit acknowledged the officers used excessive force and said should they use the device in such a manner again, it would "cross a constitutional line," but they were within their rights according to the law at the time. Now, the officers are hoping the Supreme Court will hear their appeal over what they fear could be the loss of their ability to use a "useful pain technique." The Supreme Court is expected to rule on whether or not it will hear the case next week. (Related: Diabetic college student tased by police while in a state of shock now suing)* The New York Times reports*Malaika Brooks, seven months pregnant, was pulled over for speeding when driving her son to school in 2004. At the time, she said she would accept the ticket that was being issued to her, but would not sign it as it would acknowledge guilt for a violation Brooks didn't believe she had committed. Not signing the ticket was a crime and officers were instructed by their sergeant to arrest her, but she would not get out of the car. The New York Times has more on what transpired from there:
The situation plainly called for bold action, and Officer Juan M. Ornelas met the challenge by brandishing a Taser and asking Ms. Brooks if she knew what it was. She did not, but she told Officer Ornelas what she did know. “I have to go to the bathroom,” she said. “I am pregnant. I’m less than 60 days from having my baby.” The three men assessed the situation and conferred. “Well, don’t do it in her stomach,” one said. “Do it in her thigh.” Officer Ornelas twisted Ms. Brooks’s arm behind her back. A colleague, Officer Donald M. Jones, applied the Taser to Ms. Brooks’s left thigh, causing her to cry out and honk the car’s horn. A half-minute later, Officer Jones applied the Taser again, now to Ms. Brooks’s left arm. He waited six seconds before pressing it into her neck. Ms. Brooks fell over, and the officers dragged her into the street, laying her face down and cuffing her hands behind her back.
Brooks, whose baby girl was born perfectly healthy, was convicted of a misdemeanor but she sued the officers for brutality. (Related: Aerial 'Shadowhawk' police drones can now deploy tasers and tear gas) Chief Judge Alex Kozinski is reported as defending the officer's actions, and*Judge Barry G. Silverman also said he considered “tasing was a humane way to force Brooks out of her car.” The Times states the officers are now bringing the case to the Supreme Court to clear their names and preserve their use of the tasers. Several other groups including the Los Angeles County Police Chiefs’ Association have also asked for the case to be heard, believing the Ninth Circuit’s ruling “damages the rule of law:"
“It won’t be long,”*their brief said, “before the word spreads throughout society’s criminal underground that the Ninth Circuit hasn’t simply given them a ‘get out of jail free’ card, but a ‘never have to go to jail in the first place’ card.”
The Times reports Brooks' lawyer maintaining that the use of a taser on the pregnant woman was inappropriate and "inexcusable conduct." [H/T Gizmodo]

Actor and comedian Jon Lovitz went on the Sean Hannity Show Thursday night and proved that his well-known “bullsh*t” rant was no fluke: he has absolutely no problem with criticizing President Barack Obama's tactics or policies. "What I find is [the president] is hypocritical with saying, you know, 'the 1 percent don't get us,' and he's a multi-millionaire now,” Lovitz said during his interview Hannity. "'You know, they're not paying their fair share of taxes, now I'm going over to George Clooney's house to get money from millionaires and billionaires,'" Lovitz said, imitating President Obama, "and he collected $15 million!" "'Wall Street are the bad guys, but now I have to go to a dinner with Wall Street people to get money for my campaign," Lovitz said, continuing his imitation of the president. Lovitz then offered some advice for the president:
I just think he should, instead of making people victims of people who are successful, we should be telling people, "Look, you are having a hard time, I feel bad for you. Let's look at what you're doing, let's teach you how to succeed. Let's give you the tools to succeed" as opposed to turning everybody into victims, a victim mentality is what he's selling and nobody with a victim mentality will get anywhere, ever.
“They will never succeed," he added. Scores of Christian youths in the Philippines chanted "Stop the Lady Gaga concerts" at a rally Friday calling for the pop diva's shows here to be canceled despite assurances from authorities that they won't allow nudity and lewd acts. (Related:*Lady*Gaga*May Have to Cancel Concert for ‘Security Reasons’ After Threats from Radical Muslims) Sold-out crowds and angry protests followed Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" Asian tour. Fans younger than 18 were banned from the Seoul concerts over complaints her lyrics and costumes were too sexually provocative, and she was denied a concert permit in Indonesia by police under pressure from Islamic hard-liners. [caption id="attachment_316863" align="aligncenter" width="429" caption="Filipino Christian youths flash the thumbs-down signs as they chant "Stop the Lady Gaga concerts" during a rally, calling for the cancellation of the singer's May 21-22 concerts, outside the Pasay City Hall in Pasay, south of Manila, Philippines, Friday, May 18, 2012. (AP Photo/Bullit Marquez)"][/caption] About 70 members of a group called Biblemode Youth Philippines rallied in front of the Pasay City Hall in metropolitan Manila. They said they were offended by Lady Gaga's music and videos, in particular her song "Judas," which they say mocks Jesus Christ. Lady Gaga has secured papers for two concerts Monday and Tuesday, but Pasay City Mayor Antonino Calixto said he told organizers to ensure that "they follow the rules and regulations stipulated in the concert permit earlier provided by the city government."
"Although we respect artistic and musical expressions, I won't allow anyone or any group to provide acts which may be questionable in a way at any venue under my jurisdiction," he said in a statement. "We reminded the producers of Lady Gaga's concert that the show and the event as a whole shall not exhibit any nudity or lewd conduct which may be offensive to morals and good customs." Protest leader and former Philippine Congressman Benny Abante says his group plans to file a case against Lady Gaga and concert organizers if she sings "Judas" at her Manila gigs. Organizers from Ovation Productions did not immediately provide details about the upcoming concerts, including whether Lady Gaga will perform "Judas." Former Manila Mayor Jose Atienza said the singer and organizers can be punished for offending race or religion. Under the penal code in the conservative, majority Roman Catholic country, the penalty can range from six months to six years in prison, although no one has been convicted recently. Atienza and a prominent lawyer, Romulo Macalintal, met earlier Friday with Calixto to press their concern about the concerts, which will be held at the newly constructed seaside Mall of Asia arena with a seating capacity of 20,000. The Rev. Reyzel Cayanan from Biblemode Youth Philippines said he will lead another protest march and a candlelight vigil Saturday near the concert venue.

As most anyone who's watched the television show "Portlandia" knows, the city of Portland is where "the dream of the 90's" (IE comfortable living without anything resembling work in the real world) is still alive. The city has become one of America's most potent symbols of radical Leftism. Moreover, the modern university system has itself become a hotbed for Leftist thinking, especially on issues pertaining to Israel, Palestine and Islam. So when an avowedly Christian, pro-Israeli anti-terrorism expert comes to speak at a university that's located in Portland, fireworks should be expected. Unfortunately for a group of protesters who decided to stage a walkout against terrorism expert Erick Stakelbeck, those fireworks blew up in their face. Stakelbeck spoke at Portland State University this Monday on the topic of developments in the Middle East and the growing threat against Israel. The speech was organized by Portland State's chapter of Christians United for Israel. Naturally enough, controversy dogged the event far before Stakelbeck even set foot on-campus. For instance, fliers advertising the event were defaced with Swastikas and the inscription "Never again includes Palestinians." Stakelbeck himself took note of the defacements, and decried them as anti-Semitic propaganda. However, he was at least forewarned of what the reaction would be like, which means he knew precisely what to anticipate when he arrived at Portland State. As he puts it:
It was mostly a motley bunch of hijab and skullcap-clad Muslims, aging ex-hippies and tie-dyed stragglers who looked as if they just rolled in from the local Occupy protest. There were, it must be said, a handful of reasonably normal-looking people with them as well. Normal, except for their brainwashed, aggressive Leftist views.[...] I locked eyes with a few of them--who were staring a hole through me—gave them a big smile, and said “Hey, thanks for coming out! Be sure to stay for the whole speech—I’d like to talk to you during the Q and A.” They just looked at me, dumbfounded. You could almost hear them mumble through their tape. “Doesn’t he know he’s supposed to be rattled by us?”
Stakelbeck was, as it turns out, anything*but rattled. Then again, that's not surprising, given he was facing this motley crew: And how did Stakelbeck show his lack of fear once he was actually at the podium? Watch the video below to find out - some schadenfreude may result: Yes, that's right, Stakelbeck publicly dared the protesters to debate him, rather than simply sitting silently or walking out. The result was that, instead of looking like courageous protesters against intolerance, the protesters looked like cowards who would rather make public shows of hurt feelings than actually confront what they saw as dangerous ideas. But don't tell them that. A cameraman who caught video of their post-protest debriefing caught them exulting that they had forced Stakelbeck to "curb his racism," while spouting ad hominem attacks about his "white privilege" and anti-semitic talking points about Israel. Witness the unintentional comedy below: Advantage: Stakelbeck.

Friday was the launch of Facebook's highly anticipated IPO, finishing the day with*a mere 23 cents a share gain...

Friday was the launch of Facebook's highly anticipated IPO, finishing the day with*a mere 23 cents a share gain, suggesting a cooler-than-expected reception. Rather then focusing on the*news of the newly minted billionaires in Northern California, the "Real News" panel opened Friday discussing the action of Sens. Chuck Schumer and Bob Casey in Washington D.C., who*have introduced legislation that would seek to tax Ex-patriot millionaires and billionaires at a 30 percent capital gains rate based on the highly publicized citizenship withdrawal of Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. Saverin is taking up residence in Singapore, a country without a capital gains tax, making a move that will potentially save him $67 million dollars in taxes. There’s a lot of outrage over what many see as a tax dodge, but Saverin points out he does have to pay a 15% exit tax. The Washington Post reports on what will go into the "ex-PATRIOT Act:"
Under the proposal, “any expatriate with either a net worth of $2 million or an average income tax liability of at least $148,000 over the last five years will be presumed to have renounced their citizenship for tax avoidance purposes,” according to a release from Schumer’s office, and they would pay 30 percent capital gains tax — the same rate as people pay in the U.S. If an expatriate can prove he or she has a legitimate reason for renouncing U.S. citizenship, no penalties will apply. The bill would tax any prospective gains an expatriate who has renounced his or her citizenship in the past ten years who did so for purposes of tax avoidance. In Saverin’s case, Schumer spokesman Brian Fallows said that if the Facebook co-founder liquidates all his holdings in the company before the bill is passed, he will escape penalty. However, if he takes his time selling off his assets, for the purpose of letting it grow and then seeks to sell off and he would pay 30 percent on those earnings. According to Schumer’s office, 1,780 people gave up their citizenship in 2011, a rise from 235 in 2008.
Some argue though that the legislation goes too far by harming the U.S.' pro-business global reputation, and forwards un-American sentiments. A recent column in The Wall Street Journal makes sure to acknowledge that the editorial board does not have any sympathy for Saverin, but believes the suggested legislation appeals to "the age of envy" and is a move by senators who "hope to score political points by punishing the fleeing rich who will strike most Americans as unpatriotic."
Whatever Mr. Saverin's motivation, the more important point is that it is his decision, however misguided. America was built on millions of similar individual decisions to come to our shores. It is precisely that ability to decide for oneself that has made America such a magnet for two centuries. The way to continue to be a magnet for the best and brightest is not to impose Soviet-style exit taxes to punish people who want to leave the country. That is what oppressive and demagogic regimes do, and it's humiliating to see U.S. Senators posture in such fashion. The way to punish Mr. Saverin is to make the U.S. so appealing and dynamic again that he'll be sorry he ever left.
Will Cain had some strong feelings towards the ex-American during the opening segment of "Real News" Friday. "Eduardo Saverin is an ass" said Cain Friday. With that in mind though, Will took agreement with many of the points in the Wall Street Journal column, questioning whether the punishment sets a more negative*precedent*than Saverin's action. S.E. Cupp commented that the story gives further evidence that lawmakers should work to make the United States a more attractive place for entreprenuers and business leaders, who would in turn want to stay here.
